Energy policy
Sir,—Your editorial of November 25 in praise of the Government’s energy policy snows all tne anomolies and inconsistencies with which the policy itself is riddled. You state" that achieving energy self-sufficiency is the number one priority. Fair enough. You state that the Government has offered a plan to achieve this by the end of the century. Absolute rubbish.' Central to
the Government’s so-called plan is the synthetic petrol plant, which will produce only 30 per cent of this country’s petrol needs, and the refinery expansion, which must rely on imported crude oil as its feedstock. The Government’s plan for self-sufficiency is a myth. In fact their own 1981 Energy Plan confirms this. By 1995-96 (the end of their planning period), 62 per cent of all our liquid fuel feedstocks will still be imported. That does not look like oil self-sufficiency to me.— Yours, etc., ian McChesney. November 25, 1981.
