NZPA-Reuter New York A special United Nations investigation set up to look into allegations of chemical warfare in Kampuchea. Laos, and Afghanistan said yesterday it could not say whether or not such weapons had been used.
A team consisting of experts from Egypt, Kenya, the Philippines, and Peru said it had not been able to reach a final conclusion.
The panel's report said it was only able to visit some refugee camps in Thailand, and had been unable to accept an invitation to visit Pakistan, where an estimated two million refugees from Afghanistan have sought asylum. The panel's leader, MajorGeneral Esmat Ezz of Egypt, said the report was inconclusive and added that the group had found itself “unable to reach a final conclusion as to whether or not chemical warfare agents had been used.”
The report said the panel had visited refugee canqps in Thailand but had not’been able to trace individuals mentioned in American evidence.
The panel’s report said that medical personnel interviewed in Thailand’s refugee camps reported that they had not come across any cases which could be attributed to chemical warfare.
