Gear decision next week
The Meat Worker’s Union has delayed making any decision on the Gear Meat works at Petone until after the General Election. The union's mangement committee considered a report on the company’s closing of the plant, but the union’s secretary, Mr A. J. Kennedy, said that a decision on a union response would not be made until the committe'e met in Christchurch next week. Mr Kennedy told a meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Economic Society yes-
terday that some Workers had been at the Petone works for 30 years, yet had been told by the company that they would not get redundancy pay. “We .say workers have equity in the company, too," Mr Kennedy said. To a suggestion from the audience that the workers could get jobs at other works, Mr Kennedy said that this was one of the alternatives being put forward. “However, what would your reaction be? It is great stuff if you are not one of them,” he said.
