Forecast of tax increase of $2000

PA Auckland A National government would have to increase tax by 28 per cent, or $2OOO per taxpayer, next year, said the Labour leader (Mr Rowling) yesterday. He told a press conference that the tax rise would be needed to fund National’s “think big” programme and other promises. Mr Muldoon had given no explanation to the people as to how “think big” would be financed. Mr Rowling said. “We have had a look at the implications of this over the last two days,” he said. Mr Rowling said the Government was talking about a commitment on an annual basis, certainly in the first year, of between $llOO million and $1250 million. "Given the state of the deficit, both internally and externally, we would say that the Government, to accept any degree of responsibility, could not fund more than between $BOO million and $lOOO million from loan sources.

“In other words it has got to fund the balance from some revenue source,” 'Mr Rowling said.
