Defence bid for paintings

PA Wellington The Ministry of Defence has put in a bid for the New Zealand collection of war paintings, according to the Secretary of Defence (Mr Denis McLean). He was speaking at the launching of a book, “Peter Mclntyre: War Artist,” made up of 44 newly executed paintings and 75 pencil sketches and Mr Mclntyre's account of his days as a war artist with the New Zealand

forces in Crete, North Africa, and Italy. Mr McLean said that the Ministry had put in a bid for the paintings. It had not been accepted, although it remained open. The Internal Affairs Department was responsible for the paintings, which are in the care of the National Museum. “The paintings have not been catalogued properly and they certainly have not been properly conserved,” Mr McLean said. If the Min-

istry of Defence obtained the paintings it would catalogue and conserve them as required. Mr McLean estimated later that “hundreds” of paintings by Mr Mclntyre and other artists were still on loan or hanging on office walls or even in smoke-filled rooms. The Internal Affairs Department said at the beginning of this year that it was looking for a permanent home for the paintings.
