Hurunui leads
Last in the Senior Shield inter-sub-association cricket series last season, Hurunui has taken a first round lead in this season’s competition. Hurunui has achieved this by gaining first innings points and bonus points against Malvern, to lead by two points from Ashley, which won on the first innings against Banks Peninsula. Strengthened by some gains, Hurunui will have a tougher test of its new strength when the second round is played this Sunday. Then Hurunui will play the defending champion, Ellesmere, at Cheviot, and Malvern will play last year’s runner-up, at Sheffield. First round points are:— Hurunui 10, Ashley 8, Banks Peninsula 3, Malvern 1, Ellesmere (a bye) 0. Malvern has taken a first round lead in the under 23 series for the Norm Allen Trophy by getting outright and bonus points against Banks Peninsula for 14 points. Hurunui is second after getting 12 points for beating last year’s winner. Ellesmere, which got 10 points from a first innings lead and bonus points. Banks Peninsula and Ashley (a bye) have no points.
