Canterbury loses key player through injury

A last-minute injury at a practice session has robbed the Canterbury women’s cricket team of a key player for this season’s interprovincial campaign.

The opening bowler, a former New Zealand representative. Sheree Harris, fell at a provincial squad practice at the Christ’s College grounds at Hagley Park, and according to a selector. Shirley Cowles, how faces a sixweek spell with her ’ leg in plaster.

"She jumped for a ball over her head,, fell back on her ankle and has torn ligaments in the back of her leg,” Mrs Cowles said.

Mrs Cowles said the Riccarton pace bowler “will be missed” after her recent good form. “She has had two or three bags of five wickets this season,” she said..

Riccarton’s Delwyn Costello, originally named in the second eleven, will come in as a replacement. Only one new cap. the Sydenham batswoman. Mary Campbell, has been picked by the selectors (Mrs Cowles,

and Messrs Bill McKenna and Jack Harliwich) to play in Auckland from December 27 to January 7.

The team is: Leslie Murdoch (capt.). Sue Rattray, Costello (Riccarton); Nichol'a Turner (vice-capt.), Campbell. Nancy Williams. Sue Brown (Sydenham): Debbie Hockley (Lancaster Park); Vicki Burtt. Ann McKenna, Marg Francis. Kay Gilray, Karen Hadlee (St Albans). The team to play in the national second XI tournament in Christchurch from December 13-17 is: Nicki Sherriff (capt.), Doona Avery, Karen Gunn (Riccarton); Vivienne Cowles (vicecapt.), Sue Storey, Debra Ford (Lancaster Park); Kay Wickes. Sheryl Gardyne, Sharon Weaver (Sydenham); Bridget Legg. Sarah Illingworth, Elizabeth Wilson (St Albans).
