Convent at Reefton to close

Reefton's convent will close in January after more than 90 years of service. A shortage of nuns throughout New Zealand has made it necessary for the two at the convent to be moved to Wellington. "We are short ot sisters and have works to do here in Wellington,” said Sister Germaine, the Superior-General of the Sisters of Mercy, Wellington. "We are very sad to be leaving Reefton," she said. Traditionally, the Sisters of Mercy have run the Sacred Heart primary school in Reefton. A lay headmaster

will be appointed to the school for next year, and it will continue with a lay staff. The Reefton area would be visited regularly by a sister attached to the’Catholic Religious Education Office and based in Blenheim, said Sister Germaine. "I do not know yet what will happen to the" convent building. That decision will be made in the new vear, but it is a large building and requires a lot of maintenance." Although the number of nuns was declining, Sister Germaine said she did not know of any other convents that were closing.
