A new coastal shipping service which.was to have started this week serving Lyttelton, Timaru, New Plymouth, and Onehunga on a regular 10-day to 12-day cycle has been delayed, according to a spokesman for Coastal Shipping, Ltd. The planned service would use the m.v. Onehunga, a 1459-ton vessel formerly named the Fijian and. under that name, employed on the Auckland Suva-Lautbka service. “We have encountered some delays,” said the Christchurch spokesman, "and we are waiting to hear from our Auckland office as to when the service will begin.” He discounted rumours that the ship had encountered industrial problems. ta ta ta As sails gave way to paddle wheels and thence to propellers for ship propulsion, propellers may be' the next to go, according to Lloyd's Register of shipping in its daily publication. “Lloyd’s List.” Dutch scientists are developing a propulsion system which would replace propellers with flapping “fishtails.” Research results to date indicate gains in propulsive efficiency of about 5 per cent for roll-on vessels and as much as 15 per cent for bulk carriers and tankers.
