‘Professionalism’ of teachers
Sir,—Despite constant repetition. the title of "profession” claimed by teachers is a purely honorary one unless supported by substantive evidence such as a Royal Charter, as honorary in fact as that claimed by the “oldest profession” only in this case a minimum standard of dress is highly desirable, if not essential. Can we judge teachers'
claims by some ot the results they have achieved? 1. Shopkeepers who cannot spell a three-letter word like mat; admittedly they stock matt paints as well as doormats. 2. A secondary-school headmaster who announced on TV that strike action was “eminent”. 3. Journalists who describe people living overseas as “expatriots". 4. Hi-fi specialists who cannot distinguish between a meter and a metre, or a bass or base speaker. 5. Radio and TV journalists who do not know the difference between a Premier and a premiere — Yours, etc.. A. BROWN. November 19. 1981.
