D’Oyly in trouble
The fate of the D’Oyly Carte opera company will be decided soon at a meeting of the trustees. The touring group, which has been staging the works of Gilbert and Sullivan for more than 100 years, has been struggling from crisis to crisis for months. Earlier this year it launched an urgent appeal for sponsorship after the arts council refused to give it a grant. But nothing like enough cash has been raised. The company suffered a big blow this year when an arts council inquiry into light opera criticised its “tired and wooden performances” and the poor musical standard. — London.
