Crackdown on crime
PA . ■ Wellington A police campaign to stop street crime in central Wellington resulted in about 50 arrests at the week-end. About 100 people have now been arrested during Operation Central City which is aimed at allowing people to walk Wellington’s streets in safety at night. Most of those arrested at •the week-end were charged with what police described as street offences — drunkenness. disorderly behaviour, and obscene language. A number were also arrested after a police search of a gang house. Senior-Sergeant David Carey, the head of Operation Central City, said the crackdown had been prompted by a number of serious offences including guns being brandished and fired, and twc murders.
