‘Press’ classic to low handicappers
For the first time in five years of “The Press” Garden City Golf Classic, team players with single-figure handicaps prevailed in the two-day amateur tournament on Saturday and yesterday at the two Harewood .courses. The winning team comprised John McCormick, a five-handicapper, two' six handicappers, Paul Boatwood and Ray McLean, and a ninehandicapper, John Francis. A feature qf the, tournament was a hole-in-one yesterday at : the eleventh hole on the old course by Russell Herbert. He used a wedge on the 110 m. hole. The ' successful quartet scored 299 stableford ‘points
over the 36 holes. After the first day, the four players were equal first on 147 -points. They had a team talk before yesterday’s round and decided that they had to play under their handicaps and score 38 points each. In fact all members did pull their weight and with scores of 40 points, 38, 38 and 36, the team finished a comfortable victor, seven points ahead of two fours which finished on 292. “It was a team effort all the way and that about sums it up,” said Ray McLean. This year’s charity raised money for a viewscan portable electronic reading aid to The Low Vision Care Clinic
and a set ot electronic bed and chair scales for the Department of Nephrology at Christchurch Hospital. Leading teams were:-
