Chch bowls teams
For the first time in many years Wally Wilkinson’s name is missing from a Christchurch representative bowls list. However, it is not that Wilkinson, who has returned this summer to Beckenham after two years at Linwood, was unwanted. The convener of the centre selection panel, Mr Peter Rose, said yesterday that it had been at his' own request that Wilkinson had not been considered. "He just did not feel that he has been playing enough, or well enough,” said Mr Rose. Two senior teams and two junior teams have been named, the only difference in each case being the addition of extra players from the 28 needed for Town-Country fixtures to the 32 required for inter-centre matches. The senior Town team to play Country at Linwood on November 29 is: N. Poole. C. Thompson (Sumner). B. Johns
(Christchurch). W. McDonald, W. Reid (Spreydon), L. Hanger, A. Grainger (Burnside), T. Coup, A. Griffin (Kaiapoi), M. King (Woolston W.M.C.), M. Penfold (Rangiora), B. McGowan, S. Lawson (Papanui). R. Bailey, M. Moffat. S. Calder. K. Watson (Linwood), I. Scott, I. McAllister (Dallington). F. Carter, R. Howman (Fendalton). G. Stanley, P. Meier, J. Dale (South Brighton), C. Mercer, P. Jolly (Edgeware), W. Newburgh (Elmwood), C. McPherson (St Martins). This event will, for the first time, be played under the Rothmans system of singles, pairs and fours. The singles players are Poole, Johns, McDonald and Hanger; the pairs King and Coup, Bailey and McGowan, Carter and Howman, and McAllister and Scott; and the fours skips Dale, Moffatt, Penfold and Lawson. McGowan replaces M. Robinson (Barrington), who was not available, but both these players are in the 32 for the South Island
quadrangular tournament at Timaru on December 6. Moffat is unavailable for this fixture and the additions to bring ttie team up to the full complement of eight fours are R. Cullen (Spreydon). M. Sealby (Burwood), W. Fitchett (Linwood) and F. Aymes (Allenton). A somewhat surprising omission from this team is Morris Nairn, the Leeston skip who has enjoyed considerable success in the last two years. The 32 players for the Junior team to play South Canterbury at Papanui on December 6 are:— C. Carter (Fendalton), S. Buttar, J. Lenz (Burnside), N. Tomlinson (Hornby W.M.C.), L. McLennan (Hornby), F. Cater (Beckenham), D. Cope (Spreydon), B. Bishop (United), P. Doig (Elmwood). G. Gray, G. Brosnan (Dallington), I. Ward (Linwood), P. Collett. J. O’Neill (Papanui), A. Rae (Canterbury), G. O’Shaughnessy (Avon), R. Wisker (Halswell), R. Fridd (Woolston Park), D. Philpott (St Albans), R. Armstrong (Barrington), K. Allsop (Boon Hay),. S. Dailey (Cashmere), A. Lavell (Sumner), R. Brown (Woolston W.M.C.), R. Venning (Rangiora), M. Fechney (Allenton), D. Eaden (Ashburton M.S.A.), A. Tutbery (Hampstead), C. Godsell (Ashburton), D. Fagan (Rakaia), E. Woodward (Darfield), P. Norton (Waikari). The last eight country players are ineligible for the Town team, to meet Country at Linwood on December 13, and the four additions to enable the selection of four singles, pairs and fours combinations are T. Darby (Spreydon), A. Corbett (Christchurch), D. Bloom (South Brighton) and J. Clarke (Halswell).
