On departing from Christchurch we travel through Kaikoura to Picton where we stay for 2 nights. While jn Picton we take a cruise of the beautiful Marlborough Sounds and a trip over the hill to Portage where we have a delightful smorgasbord lunch. Then on through Nelson to Takaka for another 2 nights; during our stay here we visit the tame eels and see them fed by hand, and take a fourwheel drive vehicle from Collingwood along the sand of Farewell Spit, a truly remarkable experience. After departing from Takaka we travel on through beautiful native bush and lush dairy country to Westport for a night. The next morning we travel down the magnificent bushclad coastline, visiting Punakaikai Pancake rocks and Blowholes then on to Shanty Town, a realistic replica of an old Goldmining town, where we have lunch, before climbing up through Arthurs Pass on our journey home.
