Karpov set to win chess
NZPA-Reuter Merano, ItalyAnatoly Karpov, of the Soviet Union, was poised to retain his title as world chess champion yesterday by winning a decisive sixth victory in his match against arch-rival Viktor Korchnoi. Chess experts agreed that Karpov was certain to win game 18, which was adjoured the previous evening on the forty-first move. Some experts predicted Korchnoi might resign instead of resuming play. “Karpov is on the verge of winning the match with this game,” the United States grandmaster, Robert Byrne, said. One of Korchnoi’s own aides, the British grandmaster, Michael Stean, described the challenger’s position as “awful.”
Karpov, aged 30, holds a five-two lead in the match.
