S.M.P. blamed for meat prices

PA Wellington New Zealanders were paying higher meat prices because of the high supplementary minimum prices set by the Government, said the Labour Party’s spokesman on consumer affairs, Mrs Ann Hercus, yesterday. In October, food prices had risen almost 2 per cent, a third of this increase being directly due to increases in meat prices. Mrs Hercus said: “But unfortunately. this is not all. After paying higher domestic orices, the New Zealand con-

sumer will be presented very soon with a bill for the higher export prices to be paid through taxation. This could cost as much as $385 million, or about $4BO for a typical familv.” Mrs Hercus said that Labour would not alter this season's supplementary minimum prices because the confidence of farmers was too important for that. However, farmers wanted to be told the truth and not to be bribed one year and then ignored the next.
