New Zealand final — a battle of the females

By

BOB SCHUMACHER

A brindle bitch from Wellington and a black bitch from Canterbury are expected to hold the key to the Lion Breweries New Zealand greyhound championship final at Queen Elizabeth II Park tomorrow evening. The Wellington visitor is Ronwin Girl (Winronin—Scarf) which won her semi-final last Thursday stylishly when having her first run on the track. Her time was the slowest of the four semi-finals but with the experience on the track she should be capable of lowering it considerably. The Canterbury bitch is Tredeka Lass, which won last year's national final and also the inaugural Trans Tasman series against the country’s best longtails. Bill Kingston’s champion No Pardons—Bishopdale Lass greyhound was not at her best in the semi-finals. She missed the jump but got in a good position early and looked set for an easy win at the top of the home straight. However, she lacked her characteristic strong finishing burst and just held second by a nose. That was enough to give her a start in the $3OOO final. A bitch is almost certain to win the championship for the third successive year. Only two dogs - Mac The Taff (Otago) and Mr Buddv - are in the final field of eight and neither is fancied although Mac The Taff finished resolutely to run second to Ronwin Girl. Apart from Ronwin Girl and Mac The Taff, the other six finalists are from Christchurch. The fastest qualifier was Silent Illusion, which finished fourth in last year's New Zealand championship. r , She is a most talented chaser and finishes powerfully. However, she has the disadvantage of box No. 5 and will be lucky to get a clear run on the first turn. A better proposition might be Devoted Lady which will be suited by a wide draw. She has won her last starts impressively and has the stamina to match a sharp turn of speed. The likely pacemaker is the little Ratio Mist bitch. Lucky Sheba, which set a torrid pace in her semi-final and was only collared by Silent Illusion over the last 50m. However, she will be at good odds and so might She’s A Sweetie, the conqueror of Tredeka Lass in the semi-finals.

The championship is the first leg of the T.A.B. double and the second leg will be on the New Pacific Stakes, a combined class 4 and 5 race over 560 m. Argent Wave, which just missed a start in the New Zealand final, and Little Upstart, an easy last-start winner over the distance, might dispute the favouritism.
