Payments allegation
NZPA London New Zealand ' rugby players, playing in France in their off-season, are being paid SNZ23O a week, a London newspaper claimed yesterday. Terry O’Connor, writing in the “Daily Mail,” said that French rugby has taken a further step towards professionalism this season with the recruitment of 60 New Zealanders to their club scene. “It is accepted that all are paid about SNZ23O a week for playing and they supplement their income with parttime work,” he said. O’Connor said that a New Zealander had told him he was being paid SNZI6O a week, or SNZ23O for a win, which provided a financial basis for living. He said that clubs talked openly about their payments to players and in many cases the sums involved were far more than the French Rugby League could afford.
