Admirable entries for 007 contest
(By
HANS PETROVIC)
By now, all of the 20 successful entrants of our James Bond Competition whom it was possible to notify by ’phone have been informed of their win of double-pass tickets to this Thursday’s opening (or any later screening) of “For Your Eyes Only” at the new Regent Twin Cinema Complex. Notifications of their wins and the double passes have also been sent by United Artists to the successful entrants and should have been received by most by today. The double passes will enable the recipients to obtain tickets for “For Your Eyes Only” at the Regent for any day of their choice. The contest, run. in Thursday’s “At the Cinema” column during the past three weeks, required people to submit the name of the basic 12 James Bond movies in chronological order and, also, listing the main male and female actor in each film, and its director?' The answers to these questions are given to the right, and the list of 20 winners follows. Gregory McCreanor, 117 Memorial Avenue; Stephen Ross, 11 Marion Street; N. R. Graham, 126 A Lake Terrace Road; A. E. E. Ivory, 268 Centaurus Road; Janet McNaughtan, 24 Valley Road; M. O’Connor, 48 Merrin Street; Martin Gee, 130 Rose Street; Murray Swann, 7 Wordsworth Street; I.MacDonald, 21 Manuka St; J. Stewart, 49 English Street; Lyndon Bowden, 565 Marshland Road; Richard Wong, Ham Flats; Simon D. Pollard, 277 Cambridge Terrace; Nicola Read, 104 Wainoni Road; Anne O’Callaghan, 14 Riley Crescent; Kreso Ivos, 8 Skye Place; G. Lindsay, 23A Leitch Street (all the above of Christchurch);
Andrew Hobern, West Melton;
Richard Scheib, Geraldine; and
Donald Tilson, Hinds. If any of the winners have not received their . doublepass invitations by this Thursday, will they please let me know so that I can try to rectify the matter. The remarkable thing about the 50 or so entries is that all but about four of them listed the 12 movies in their correct chronological order—and most made the same mistake of giving “From Russia With Love” and “Goldfinger” the wrong way around. Therefore, it was necessary to have the additional t uestions. (male and female actors, director) to sort out the best entries.
On these questions, virtually everyone had the correct actors (Sean Connery, George Lazenby or Roger Moore) playing the part of Bond in the right film.
The answers to the leading ladies question were not as successful—indeed, sometimes spotty—probably because some films promoted more than one actress, while others really had no memorable female star.
The question about the directors received mixed answers—some entrants knowing the directors of the early movies but not the more recent ones, and vice versa.
Probably the most confusing film was “On Her Majesty’s Service,” the only one starring Lazenby as 007, and the only one directed by Peter Hunt. Nevertheless, most of the entries were very good, and some even admirable, demonstrating a lot of knowledge, study and effort. Thank you very much for the many splendid entries. It just goes to show you don’t have to be mad to be a James Bond fan or a movie nut.
