Land Court at Chathams

PA Wellington The first sitting of the Maori Land Court on the Chatham Islands for 22 years will start at Waitangi tomorrow.

The Court’s chief register, Mr A. N. F. Harris, said yesterday that the sitting, where Judge M. C. Smith was scheduled to hear 34 applications, would also be the first with a judge for 45 years.

The last sitting, in 1959, was presided over by Commissioner Clifford Stace. There are no longer any Maori Land Court commissioners.

The last sitting with a judge was presided over by Judge John Harvey. Sittings of the court since then .have been at various places in New Zealand, but mainly at Christchurch.
