Six-wicket win to England
NZPA-Reuter Pune, India England’s cricketers stormed to a six-wicket win over India under-22 after being set 301 to score in 150 minutes and 20 overs yesterday. A thunderous 98 by lan Botham supported by a solid 94 from David Gower clinched England’s victory at 303 for four, with four overs to spare on the final day of their three-day match. . The England. batsmen underlined their expertise at chasing runs against the clock and exposed an inexperienced Indian attack on a placid pitch.
England, which opened the tour by winning a one-day game last Wednesday, achieved victory in the first three-day match after the under-22 side declared its second innings at 180 for two at lunch. Gower and Mike Gatting, who scored 42, launched England’s victory bid by putting on 77 for the first wicket, but it was a second-wicket partnership of 144 between Gower and Botham which decisively turned the match England’s way. The all-rounder Botham, who survived chances at 52 and 83, hammered five sixes and nine fours.
