MR D. J. TRUMAN Planning pressure needed
The West Coast is entering an exciting phase of .regional growth based on its natural resources and on land development, says the National Party candidate, Mr Douglas Truman. However, it is imperative that pressure is maintained in Wellington at the planning level. "The newly formed United Council is now an effective spokesman for the region
and lam pleased.to have been involved in its planning stages." he says. "Now I believe I can best serve the region in Wellington. Together we can ensure that the Coast continues in a steady., if ' not spectacular, growth cycle. “I believe I can give opr province impact in Parliament that. we , have lacked for many years." 7
However. Mr Truman says there is no “magic word" treatment to overcome the decline in New Zealand's rural centres. The West Coast should lobbv the Gov-.
eminent as a united region and as its separate communities. An awareness of the area s regional problems has already been shown, and the big investment in land development and farm settlement programmes have been successful.
The present Government is forging ahead with a realistic growth strategy for the future, and the West Coast is well placed to play a part in it-, he says. The whole theme of growth is based on energy and the West Coast is rich in energy resources. Mining, fishing, and forestry have a very bright future -on the West Coast. “We must : encourage in-
vestment in research and mining, but not lose sight of the principles of a fair deal." he says. The West Coast has been a safe Labour seat for 50 years, but no new sustained industries had been developed.
Mr Truman, who is 41. has two children, and lives in Greymouth. He has been active in local authorities, including the Grey County Council, the Greymouth Harbour Board, and the West Coast Regional Development Council. A director of several West Coast companies he has also served in executive positions in Jaycees and the Chamber of Commerce.
