Perth colt wins Derby
NZPA Perth The Perth colt Vortilla, brilliantly broke an interstate stranglehold on the West Australian Derby when he scored a fighting win in the $lOO,OOO classic at Ascot on Saturday. • . He won by a neck from the Mulbourne gelding. Binbinga, with two-and-a-half lengths to the odds-on favdUrtie, Brewery Boy, from Tommy Smith’s Sydney stable. Vortilla was the first West Australian horse. since Ngawyni (1975) to win the Derby. The victory was a triumph for the top Perth jockey, Rod Kemp, and the state's leading owner-trainer, Stan Quinlivan.
Kemp was not afraid to adopt dashing tactics on Vortilla. He went three wide rather than let Binbinga and Brewery Boy get too far away when they dashed ahead at the 600 m.
