Lyttelton
PROFILE: A mainly suburban electorate which takes in the housing areas of Cashmere, Woolston, Sumner, and across the Port Hills to Lyttelton. It also takes in the Chatham Islands. It is a marginal seat which has changed from National to Labour over the last 30 years. It is described as a marginal Labour seat, although the Labour member of Parliament, Mrs Ann Hercus, has probably strengthened Labour’s hold. In 1975, National had a 291 majority. 1978 results: Labour, 10,493; National, 9070, Social Credit, 1294; Values, 577. National would need a 3.7 per cent swing to win the seat.
