National Party policy
Sir,—We are hearing more and more about the Muldoon Government’s attack on the freedom of the individual. The “Observer” of London is on the right track. So is the present Government — so far Right that two current bills can be seen as stepping stones to a Rightist dictatorship. The Law Society says in its latest newsletter (Number 138) that the Transport Amendment Bill
contains “unwarranted and unjustified intrusions into the liberty of the subject and entitlement of the subject to have a prosecution against him proved to acceptable standards of proof.” Also that the National Development Act Amendment. Bill would “tend to prejudice the rights of the public and of objector to national works by diminishing the role of the planning tribunal and the Commission for the Environment, and by extending the powers of the executive government.” Clearly Mr Muldoon has abandoned liberalism to Labour’s strong liberal wing.—Yours, etc.,
D. J, O’ROURKE. November 9, 1981.
