Unemployment benefits
Sir,—We draw attention to amomalies in' unemployment benefits. If you are sick or an invalid, you can qualify for a benefit at 15, and are considered for adult rates at 18. If you are unemployed, you are not eligible for benefit until you are 16, and are not considered an adult until 20. On top of that the unemployment benefit is the only emergency benefit to be taxed for those without dependent children. Furthermore, single unemployed persons may earn up to $lO a week in personal earn-
ings without it affecting their unemployment benefit; thereafter, for every $1 earned and declared, the benefit level is reduced an equivalent amount. This level of personal earnings exemption has not been increased since it was introduced nearly 10 years ago. It gives little incentive to personal effort to find casual work. However, we are advised by the Minister of Social Welfare that the matter is “under review.”— Yours, etc.,J. M. EARLE,
