Presbyterian Assembly

Sir,—Christians often seem anxious to hide one side of Jesus — that the Romans executed him because he was. a social revolutionary. He sided

with the hated and oppressed groups in society, thus incurring the wrath of the establishment — the oppressors. He is always a threat to the establishment because he takes its power away. The worst thing his church can ever do is to identify with the establishment and — openly or tacitly — condone oppression. When this happens. Jesus abandons his church for those who will fight for social justice — in reply to A. H. Steele (November 11). even groups like HART. The church is potentially the most potent weapon for social justice in existence. But it must identify with the powerless and the oppressed, as does Jesus. It may well mean loss of membership and money, but this is a worth-while price to pay for preaching the authentic Gospel of God's justice and love for all now.—Yours, etc.. R. M. ANDERSON. November 11.. 1981.
