Finals of dog trials

The work of the dogs—and of course of their masters—was of a very high standard in the final of the dog trials in the ring at the show yesterday, according to the judge. Mr W. H. Weir, of Methven., The sheep co-operated well having already been used in the trials at the Rangiora show and in the trial at the show on Wednesday, from which the three competitors were chosen for the final. Only two and three-quarter points separated the three dogs in the final, which was won by H K. Barwell, of North Loburn. with Snow. It was Mr Harwell’s third or fourth appearance in the ring at - the show, but his first win although once before with Clay, the father, of Snow, he won the trial preceding the final. Snow, a seven-year-old, won a trophy for highest points in the two heading events at the Canterbury championships this year. He was previously first and second in provincial heading events, third in a national yarding event and second in the South Island section of that event in 1979. A. G. Dickson, of Cheviot, with Tiger, could perhaps be considered a' little unlucky. Last year with Joan he was half a point behind the winner. This time he was only a quarter of a point behind. This year Tiger has won three provincial titles—one in Canterbury and two at the Nelson - Marlborough championships. The winner of the show trial on Wednesday, E. M. Barnes, from Oxford, with Queen was ’ third yesterday. Mr Weir said that Snow had a good outrun and pull, and a good steady run over all. It was a performance of a very high standard. Likewise Tiger's performance was of a very high standard. There was a good outrun and, while the sheep drifted to the right in the pull, the drives and the rest of the run were very well controlled. Queen had a good outrun but the sheep drifted to the right in the pull and were a bit free. It was a good run then until the last drive, when the sheep were again a little free, did not remain on a line and got past the pen slightly before being yarded. Results were:—Barwell’s Snow, 98 % points. Dickson's Tiger 98*2. 2. Barnes's Queen, 96. 3.
