Farrell Lines is to discontinue its service between the west coast ports of the United States and New Zealand, “for the immediate future," according to a company statement. In a report to importers and exporters, through its' New Zealand agent, Dalgety, ltd, the company said that it was continuing its policy of restructuring its operations. Unprofitable services were being eliminated, to strengthen the company’s financial position. It was also attempting to maximise profitability of its remaining services. “Consequent upon the previously announced charters of two lash vessels to the United States Military Sealift Command, the service from the West Coast of North America to and from New Zealand will be temporarily suspended. The suspension will be effective with the sailing of the Austral Moon from Auckland on December 14,” it said. Farrell Lines would consider alternatives to maintain an American flag presence on an “important trade route,” but the suspension would remain for the immediate future. The company will continue its services from the east and Gulf coasts of North America, and from New Zealand, with its four specially-designed container vessels.
