Shearing final

Dick Murphy from Waimate provided some really exciting shearing in the open final of the New Zealand Caltex Corriedale Machine Shearing championships. Murphy has introduced a new competitive element in competitive shearing this season and has toppled several “big” names. In the open final Murphy was headed in the speed stakes by the highly competitive Colin King (Te Kuiti) but Murphy’s extra points came from the quality of his workmanship. These two shearers, along with Peter Lyons (Pleasant Point) completed their 10 sheep in similar time. King was ahead by a few seconds but Lyons and Murphy were neck and neck. However King had his revenge in the Lion Beer New Zealand All Breeds championships. This competition is run at several venues and competitors have to shear lambs, cross-breds; fine wools and Corriedales. King was an easy winner and finished the series on 545 points, seven clear of D. Clark (Rangiora). Today further competitions should provide plenty of excitement in the shearing pavilion.

In the morning is the final of the Young Farmers Clubs' teams event. Teams consist of two shearers and a shed-hand. This will be followed by the final of the Dalgety’s all-breeds competition and then the Caltex blade shearing championships.
