Friesians dominate

The two dairy breeds classes were judged by the friesian, Jersey, Ayrshire and Milking Shorthorn judges. Mr M. L. W. Satherley of Palmerston North (Friesians) said that although the classes were strong, they did not have the support from breeds other than Friesians. The jersey judge, Mr D. S Mclntosh of Woodville, said that the winner, Glenmore Alberta owned by C. H. Green and Son, an eight-year-old, was a magnificent animal which- had a “lovely underline and dairyness about her.” Mr A. F. Hutchings (Ayrshire) said that the aim of all breeders was to have a cow with excellent production, and that Glenmore Alberta had all the answers. The line-up in the all breeds section was one of the best in New Zealand arid made it well worth coming from Rotorua for the judging. Glenmore Alberta has been a champion eight years running, and is also the South Island champion. Market milk . ■ The Jersey, Friesian and Ayrshire judges were responsible for this section. Mr Satherley (Friesian) said that the class was very strong, and the Friesian cows compared more than favourably with Friesians in the North Island. Mr Mclntosh (Jersey) said that the big cows exhibited in this class were what was needed in New Zealand. The day of the pretty cow was gone, and today a cow had to be a worker. Glenmore Alberta also won this class as top milk producer. Goats The goats were judged by Mrs B. Maddison of Melbourne who came to New

Zealand to judge at the Royal Show at Palmerston North and was immediately invited to Christchurch for the A. and P. Show. Mrs Maddison said that support for the goat section was on par with the last Melbourne Show, which had not been up to standard.. The Toggenburghs were quite good, but although the Saanens were showing good milk production, there could

be improvement in their bodies. There were some promising young goats coming on, and she was very impressed with the bucks. These should improve the stock’s bone and body structure, she said. The Saanens at the Palmerston North show had been far superior to those down here, but the coloured breeds had been better at the Christchurch show, Mrs Maddisoni said.
