Youth wielded bayonet
PA Dunedin A youth wielding a bayonet was thwarted by a quickthinking salesman from snatching a rifle from a Dunedin gunshop. The youth unsheathed a 30cm bayonet and took the rifle from a rack after threatening Mrs Flora Millar, one of the owners of the business. But a salesman. Mr Graeme MacDonald, reached over the counter and grabbed the rifle as the youth moved. “Things were then in a stalemate and I knew I could not panic and had to be firm,” said Mr MacDonald. The youth, though still holding the bayonet, turned and fled when Mr MacDonald refused him ammunition. The police found the bayonet in a nearby street. Inquiries were made.
