Trudy Hobbs wins trophy

Trudy Hobbs, the second favourite. showed her appreciation of the outside draw when she began swiftly and raced away with the America’s Trophy, the feature race for class 2 greyhounds at the Christchurch club’s on-course meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park last evening. Trudy Hobbs wrested the lead off Captain Kilty entering the back straight and she was never in danger of defeat from that point. The Patris-Equador fawn bitch revelled in her work and at the end she had almost six lengths to spare over Captain Kilty, which was comfortably clear of the rank outsider. Wadderin Lass. Last year’s New Zealand champion, Tredeka Lass, qualified for this year’s final on November 20, but only just. In the first semi-final of the national championship she was unable to head off the pacemaking She’s A Friendly and, although just a neck from the winner at the finish, she had only a nose to spare over the third dog. Cuddly Angel. The favourite, Devoted Lady, won the second semi-final coming from third along the back straight to easily wear down the front runner, Mr Buddy, with Killarney Angel finishing strongly for third. The Wellington visitor, Ronwin Girl, having her first start on the track, came with a brilliant run over the last 80m to take a close decision from another visiting dog, Mac The Taff (Dunedin) and Argent Wave in the third semifinal. The fourth semi-final was notable for the failure of the two favourites, Wadderin Boy and the Auckland bitch, Guardian Royal. Both had their chances, but were under pressure at the home turn. Silent Illusion won the race stylishly in the good time of 34.11 s with an outsider, Lucky Sheba, gamely holding second after setting the fast pace. WELCOME STAKES $110; C2; 560 m 4- PORGI (9) G. E.
