Trawler raised temporarily
PA Timaru The Timaru fishing trawler sunk by a freak wave off the Pareora River mouth last Saturday was brought to the surface yesterday but sank again after being taken in tow. Salvagers used air vessels to raise the 10-metre Enterprise from about 16 metres in a five-hour exercise. The trawler was taken in tow but sank after about? 2km. A further attempt will be made this morning to bring the vessel back to the Port of Timaru. A Timaru salvage company, ' J. Strachan, Ltd, bought the vessel from the
insurers but Mr Strachan said yesterday that he had made no decision about the future of the Enterprise. He said the vessel nad been damaged about the stern, apparently from bouncing on the sea bottom, but the rest appeared to be in relatively good condition. Searches of the coast in the area failed to find any trace of Ross Neil Baird, aged 29, of Timaru, who is presumed drowned. Senior-Sergeant D. T. Crowe said the coast was being searched at low tide and the police would reasses the situation tomorrow.
