Shorn with French flair?
Shearers in New Zealand usually learn their craft during a long association with the farming industry. But a visiting French girl, Anne Bachet (right), has entered the ranks of competitive shearing after only about six months experience. Miss Bachet, aged 21, is. spending this year in New Zealand to gain farming experience. Her family owns a property in the south of France. She worked on several properties in Southland and Otago. There she learned to handle sheep. . A little experience in crutching led to a two-week shearing course under a Wool Board instructor. Now she can shear about 150 Corriedales a day and she felt confident enough to enter the competitions at the Canterbury Show. She was eliminated during the intermediate heats but found the experience exciting. Miss Bachet, says that working in New Zealand shearing sheds has been a “fantastic" experience. She hopes to return home and work as a shearer in France. Show results, page 8.
