Police search for taker of yacht

PA Tauranga The finding of the abandoned yacht Solis off Coromandel on Tuesday evening is now being treated as a routine police matter. The police at Hamilton yesterday said that the incident was' being treated as the unlawful taking of a yacht and that inquiries were continuing. At this stage there was no plan to search the coastline where the yacht was found. The police said they had interviewed the owner of the Solis. Mr Terry Marsh, of Arapuni, and an official complaint had been made about the taking of the yacht. The Solis was found on Wednesday by the Whitianga fishing boat Chips, which towed her to Slipper Island, pumped water out of her, and then took her to Whitianga. It is not known whether anyone has previously been aboard the yacht. The Tauranga police said the Solis was seen leaving the Tauranga Harbour Board slipway after 10 p.m. on Monday. She had been moored to piles on the seaward side of the slip and it had been found the stern rope had been cast off and

the bow rope cut. She lett with sails set and one person on board had been seen moving quickly about the 10m sloop. The police said it was not considered unusual because yachts were coming and going at the slipway berths at all hours. The Solis was first seen adrift about 11 p.m. on November 10 by the crew of the freighter Union Rotorua. Constable R. Meiklen, of Whitianga, said the sloop was half-full of water, which it had taken through the open front and rear hatches. The handrail was broken and the water had caused interior damage. Mr Marsh said he planned to inspect the damage on Sunday before making arrangements to tow the yacht back to Tauranga. An American living in New Zealand since 1968. Mr Marsh said he had bought the yacht three years ago and had it insured. He estimated its value at $20,000, with a slightly higher replacement value. Mr Marsh said he last saw the Solis on Saturday when he left it moored to piles on the seaward side of the slip at Tauranga.
