‘Skullduggery’ seen

PA Tauranga The fact that the new computerised voter rolls would prevent dual enrolment and voting did not alter the fact that the Labour Party was indulging in electoral “skullduggery,", said the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon). Mr Muldoon’s allegations earlier this week that the Labour Party was trying to pesuade Maoris to switch from a Maori roll to a general roll in the Onehunga electorate were derided by the Labour Party.

The chief electoral officer (Mr Peter Horne) said new procedures meant that the situation in Hunua in 1978 — when hundreds of votes were disallowed, giving the seat to National after Labour had won on election night — would not happen again. “The attempt is made," said Mr Muldoon. “The fact that the computer throws it out is of little relevance except that it means they won’t get away with it." The National Party would continue to watch the situation closely, he said.
