Ashburton
PROFILE: The Ashburton electorate stretches south from the Rakaia River, nearly as far as Timaru, and west to the mountains. Covering sheep, cattle, and mixed-cropping farmland, it includes Geraldine, Temuka, and Ashburton. 1978 results: National, 10,478; Labour, 7473; Social Credit 2765; Values 271. It is a fairly safe National seat, needing an 8.4 per cent swing to move to Labour.
