'Patents being neglected’

PA Wellington New Zealand businesses are neglecting a source of technical information — patents — which could save them thousands of dollars in development costs, according to the Commissioner of Patents, Mr K. S. Dalefield. “Greater public use of the facilities we have here could benefit New Zealand’s tech-

nology immensely,” said Mr Dalefield. He gave the example of a firm which could be paying licence fees for overseas expertise which might not be covered by patent in New Zealand. Full information on every patent at present in force in New Zealand was available in the Patent Office library in Lower Hutt, he said.

Patents were valid only in the country in which they were granted, and for a limited period, Mr Dalefield said. New Zealand has recently signed an international agreement to exchange details of locally approved patents for those of the other 49 member countries of Inpadoc, the International Patent Documentation Centre.
