Opening kart series
Thirty-five drivers braved heavy rain and contested the first round of the Christchurch Kart Club’s $l5OO series at the Carrs Road raceway on Sunday. The wet track led to many spins, none more spectacular than that of Darryl Horwell's lOOcu cm Yamaha kart which managed two 720 degrees spins on the main straight in the same race. In the lOOcu cm Yamaha class, Murrav Davies, of Christchurch, and Michael Wallace (Dunedin), fought out every heat. Wallace taking the honours narrowly. The expected battle between John Hamilton (New Zealand Freighters Yamaha) and Avon Hyde (Suzuki Centre Suzuki) did not eventuate. Hamilton proved too good in the wet conditions and quickly overhauled Hyde even when’ he started behind him.
Chris Worsley was the only Christchurch driver to worry three young Nelson drivers in the lOOcu cm junior class. The top Christchurch junior karter, Brent McConnell, failed to fire and spun at least twice in every race. Results (over five heats) were:— Midgets.—Shane Drake 1. Anthony Emms 2. Bryce Coulbeck and Geoffrey Paterson equal 3. lOOcu cm junior.—Daryl Wehner (Nelson). 1. Stephen Hogg (Nelson), 2, Geoffrey Adcock (Nelson), 3. lOOcu cm Yamaha.—Michael W'allace (Dunedin). 1, Murray Davies 2, Paul Larsen 3. 125 cu cm gearbox.—John Hamilton 1. Avon Hyde 2. Clive Smith 3.
