Intervention by govt justified

PA Wellington Government intervention in industrial relations has often been to the advantage of trade unions, according to the Minister of Labour (Mr Bolger). If the government were to withdraw from the industrial relations scene the monopoly position of unions in wage bargaining would be weakened. "This sounds attractive but both the community' and the parties would have to understand the implications of such a move." he said. "They include a potentially less stable system of union coverage, because of the possibility of more union recognition disputes, inter-union rivalry, and so forth." Mr Bolger told the general council of the Employers' Federation. Mr Bolger welcomed the move towards tripartite wage talks, saying •it was essential that the government, unions, and employers started them again early in the New Year. He said he could not see an end to the government's present role in wage bargaining.
