Singapore attracts N.Z. teachers

NZPA Singapore x The Singapore Government will recruit about 15 graduate teachers of English from New Zealand as part of its programme to improve the teaching of English in schools and junior colleges. Education Ministry officials, who recently-inter-viewed 20 candidates in Auckland, have made offers of appointment to 15 of them. If they accept the offer, they are expected in Singapore early next year when schools reopen after the annual holidays. The New Zealand Education Department is helping its Singapore counterparts by offering prospective candidates no-pay leave of up to two years to encourage them to take up overseas assignments. This means that they can go back to New Zealand after a stint here and return to teaching jobs without any loss of seniority. The New Zealand contingent will complement the expatriate teacher community of about 100, mostly made up of British teachers.
