Night club purse theft
A man has been fined $lOO, and ordered to make restitu-. tion of $25, for his part in the theft of a purse and contents, valued at $5O, from a woman patron in the Doodles night club, Lichfield Street, on September 10. The defendant, Gordon Pikiao Rangi, aged 38, an unemployed labourer, had been committed for trial by jury on the charge of theft of the purse and contents from Helen Nicolle. However, before his scheduled trial he changed his plea to guilty, and was fined by Judge Fraser. Evidence at the depostions hearing had been that the complainant left her handbag on a table while dancing at the night club. The defendant was seen to take the handbag to another table and remove the purse which he gave to a woman before returning the handbag to the complainant's table. When interviewed by the police the defendant had denied knowledge of the incident. He was represented by Mr R. J. McMurtrie.
