Workshop visit by E.E.C. experts

PA Palmerston North Six European experts on Common Market sheepmeats policy are attending an international workshop on E.E.C. sheep industry perspectives at Massey University this week. The two-day workshop has been organised by the newly formed Centre of Agricultural Policy Studies at Massey in conjunction with Federated Farmers. As well as the overseas experts, the workshop has attracted some of the leading people in the New Zealand sheep industry including farmers, exporters, scientists, marketers and government representatives. “The aim of the workshop is two-fold,” said the project co-ordinator. Mr A. Shepherd, a senior research officer at the centre. “On one hand the centre is trying to set up a series of perspective policy options under which New Zealand - can expand its sheep, production and exports. We will be researching these options. “The second part of the exercise is to give ‘grass root’ farmers the chance to familiarise themselves with what is happening with E.E.C. sheepmeats policy. To achieve this, our six guests will spend up to two weeks in the country and will talk with farmers,” said Mr Shepherd.
