Magistrate for Perth

Special Correspondent Cambridge The hardy ten year-old gelding, Magistrate, will attempt to repeat his success of last season in the Perth Cup according to his ownertrainer, lan Steffert, of Morrinsvile. Mr Steffert, who is back home for a week, said at the Cambridge training track that Magistrate has been weighted at 51.5 kg for the Perth Cup. He carried 50kg last season. “He has come through his racing well. He got his tongue over the bit in the Melbourne Cup and his Jockey, Bob Skelton, said trying to restrain him was like trying to pull a concrete post out of the ground,” ■Steffert said. Magistrate showed that he has taken no harm from the racing by running third in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes on the last day at Flemington. “Magistrate will start in the Bendigo Cup and in the Ballarat Cup about a week later. Then if he comes through that well he will go to Perth. Bob Skelton is staying with him.”
