Nelson
PROFILE: An urban electorate with strong rural ties because of the surrounding area, where farming, fishing, horticulture, forestry, fruit, and tobacco growing are important. 1978 result: Labour, 9605; National, 7366; Social Credit, 1506; Values, 556. The seat is seen as fairly safe for Labour, although the presence of the former Labour member of Parliament, Mr Mel Courtney, standing as an Independent, may complicate this year’s result.
