Police arson trap

PA Dunedin Detectives have set up an information centre in Dunedin Hospital in an attempt to trap an arsonist who has lit four fires in a new ward block recently, all of them triggering the building’s sprinkler system. Detective Chief Inspector L. Dalziel, of Dunedin C. 1.8., said at a press conference yesterday that there were no firm suspects for the fires at this stage. But security at the hospital has been tightened.

The four small fires occurred last Thursday, Friday, and Sunday nights. Mr Dalziel said some of the security measures would be obvious, but visiting hours would not be disrupted. No patients would be moved from wards because of the arson attempts.

The information centre would seek information from staff and others in the building which might help in an arrest.

A team of detectives headed by Detective SeniorSergeant N. Scott is making inquiries, and crime prevention officers and the Fire Service have had talks with hospital authorities about security measures for the whole hospital. “We are concerned that there may be further fires, but we are satisfied security measures we are taking will minimise the danger,” Mr Dalziel said.
