Last week’s rates fully maintained
Limited yardings of prime . stock ensured values at the Addington market yesterdy remained similar to last week. Prime cattle had a very good sale, the demand being strong for all types. Prime lambs and sheep sold freely and values improved slightly. Prime lambs The prime lamb market finned slightly, mainly because the yarding was reduced to 267 from 573 last week. Competition for heavyweight lambs was very strong and lighter sorts sold well. Large lambs: $22.70 to $24.10. with odd sales to $26. Medium lambs: $19.50 to $22.10. Light lambs: Down to $15.50. Sales of prime lambs included.-*. D. Pickering (Oxford), 11 at $23.70 to $25; T. J. Watson (Sandy Knolls), 46 at $19.90 to $2l; G. G. Turbott (Yaldhurst), 12 at $21.60 to $26; I. McFarlane (Weedons), 20 at $22.20 to $24.30; S. J. M. Earl (Hawarden), 31 at $l9 to $22.50. Prime sheep The prime sheep yarding reduced from 2403 last week to 1248. Competition, especially for the better quality hoggets and old ewes, was strong. The hogget market improved slightly. These sold to $28.50. Old ewes sold at last week's rates. Values were:— Best hoggets: $23.30 to $26.20. Medium hoggets: $18.60 to $22.70. Best old ewes: $14.20 to $l5. iO. Medium old ewes: $12.30 to $13.90. Light old ewes: Down to $9. Prime cattle The prime cattle market remained unchanged, although competition was spirited from trade and export buyers. The yarding declined from 475 last week to 136. The best price was $5BO for a Hereford-Fnesian cross steer from W. Lewthwaite (Little River). A. D. H. Scott (Coalgate) sold a Hereford cross heifer for $486 and Mrs J. A. Jamieson (Ti Papa) a Charolais cow for $460. Steers and heifers to 220 kg sold between 166 c and 170 c a kilogram; between 220 c kg and 270 c kg, from 168 c to 173 c; and over 270 kg. to 169 c. Values were:Prime heavy steers: $530 to $ 5 prime medium steers: $405 to Prime light steers: $350 to Prime heavy heifers: $370 to $4lO, with odd sales to $486. Prime medium heifers: $320 to Prime light heifers: $220 to $3OO. Prime heavy cows: $322 to $392, with odd sales to $460. Prime medium cows; $2BO to $320. Prime light cows: $230 to $275. Brownlee (Te Pirita), 5 at $304 to $372. Vealers Only 15 vealers were offered (42 last week) and these sold well. Steers sold to $228, heifers to $222 and a bull to $l9B. Dairy cattle Seven dairy cows were yarded (one last week). The best price was $356 for a Friesian cow. Others sold to $l9B. Store sheep
The demand for store sheep was nearly as strong as last week but the numbers yarded were much smaller.
However, values did not improve a great deal. Lambs sold very well but the few hoggets offered, which were only of medium size, were harder to q Several pens of cast-for-age ewes were entered. These sold mainly between $6 and $7.60. A line of well grown Down cross lambs created a lot of interest. Competition for these, was very spirited. Fat pigs A small yarding of roixed quality fat pigs bad a difficult sale. The market lacked the buoyancy of last week. Good pigs sold well. t . The better choppers had a sound sale. Values were:— Light pork, $95 to $lO5. Medium and heavy pork, $llO to $ll5. Light and medium bacon, SI2Q to $135. Heavy’ bacon, to $l5O. Light choppers. $125 to $l5O. Heavy choppers, $l7O to $lB5. Store pigs
The demand for store pigs was not as strong as in recent weeks. Better quality weaners had a reasonable sale, but large stores were $4 to $5 cheaper than last week. Two sows and litters sold at $265 to $305. Values were:— Small weaners, $3O to $37. Good weaners, $4O to $45. Slips and small stores, $47 to $55. Good stores, $55 to $7O.
