National backs conservation
PA Wellington The National Party was committed to protecting “New Zealand's unique natural heritage,” the party has said in one of three policy statements. In the environment policy, National said it believed economic development and environmental protection “can and must go hand in hand." National was firmly committed to a path of growth, but equally committed to conservation, the policy said, citing the Government's amendments to the Water and Soil Conservation Act, the Mining Act, the Town and Country Planning Act, and its policies to reduce milling in native forests. In the overseas trade
policy the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Taiboys) said an excellent export record had been set under National’s administration. Examples quoted included the resistance of protectionism in traditional European, North American, and Japanese markets, and the negotiations towards closer economic relations with Australia. National continued to protect and develop new markets, the policy said,.par--1 ticularly in the north-east , and south-east Asian regions. ; The tourism policy said ■ National aimed to double the . number of foreign visitors r each year to one million by . 1990. ’ . i This could only be done by actively promoting the coun- ; try overseas.
